The International Organization for Migration presents the collective photo exhibition ‘’Exploring our cities…’’.
At the onset of 2021, experiencing an unprecedented reality, IOM in the framework of the HELIOS Integration Project, and in collaboration with seven (7) Municipalities across Greece and the Cities’ Network for Integration, sets off on a photographic journey to the cities of Athens, Heraklion, Ioannina, Katerini, Livadeia, Piraeus, and Thessaloniki. This collective exhibition aspires to initiate a dialogue on the perceptions of city identities and highlight aspects of peaceful coexistence between refugees, migrants, and host communities.
The preparation of the exhibition starts off during the summer of 2020, when mixed groups of amateur photographers (Greeks, refugees, and migrants) hold their first meetings in order to discuss and exchange views on the very identity of the cities they live together. Then, they organize photographic expeditions around their respective neighborhoods in an attempt to depict whatever fascinates, moves, or even unites them. It is photography they use as a common means of conveying what they may not be able to express through words; their own perception of reality.
At the same time, local photographic partners support this event through specialized seminars, presenting photography techniques, tips on ‘’framing the subject’’ and developing the ability to visualize the information that each participant is called upon to depict.
This collective exhibition is part of the broader framework of integration and awareness-raising activities implemented by IOM, in close cooperation with Municipalities and Civil Society Organizations, showcasing and promoting good practices at the local level.
The exhibition is supported by the Ministry of Migration and Asylum and funded by the European Commission.
